چکیده

Measuring visual quality, as perceived by human observers, is becoming increasingly important in a large number of applications where humans are the ultimate consumers of visual information. Many natural image databases have been developed that contain human subjective ratings of the images. Subjective quality evaluation data is less available for synthetic images, such as those commonly encountered in graphics novels, online games or internet ads. A wide variety of powerful full-reference, reduced-reference and no-reference Image Quality Assessment (IQA) algorithms have been proposed for natural images, but their performance has not been evaluated on synthetic images. In this paper we (1) conduct a series of subjective tests on a new publicly available Embedded Signal Processing Laboratory (ESPL) Synthetic Image Database, which contains 500 distorted images (20 distorted images for each of the 25 original images) in 1920 × 1080 resolution, and (2) evaluate the performance of more than 50 publicly available IQA algorithms on the new database. The synthetic images in the database were processed by post acquisition distortions, including those arising from compression and transmission. We collected 26,000 individual ratings from 64 human subjects which can be used to evaluate full-reference, reduced-reference, and no-reference IQA algorithm performance. We find that IQA models based on scene statistics models can successfully predict the perceptual quality of synthetic scenes. Perceptual quality assessment of 3D dynamic meshes: Subjective and objective studies

Nowadays, 3D mesh animations have been increasingly used in various applications, e.g., in digital entertainment and physically-based simulation. In many applications, it is possible that a surface animation undergoes some lossy operations which can impair its perceptual quality. Since the end users of mesh animations are often human beings, the perceptual quality assessment of 3D dynamic meshe...

Quality Evaluation and Nonuniform Compression of Geometrically Distorted Images Using the Quadtree Distortion Map

The paper presents an analysis of the effects of lossy compression algorithms applied to images affected by geometrical distortion. It will be shown that the encoding-decoding process results in a nonhomogeneous image degradation in the geometrically corrected image, due to the different amount of information associated to each pixel. A distortion measure named quadtree distortion map (QDM) abl...

Objective quality assessment of color images based on a generic perceptual reduced reference

When an image is supposed to have been transformed by a process like image enhancement or lossy image compression for storing or transmission, it is often necessary to measure the quality of the distorted image. This can be achieved using an image processing method called “quality criterion”. Such a process must produce objective quality scores in close relationship with subjective quality scor...

An OMNeT++ framework to evaluate video transmission in mobile wireless multimedia sensor networks

The development and evaluation of new algorithms and protocols for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) are usually supported by means of a discrete event network simulator, where OMNeT++ is one of the most important ones. However, experiments involving multimedia transmission, video flows with different characteristics, genres, group of pictures lengths, and coding techniques must be ev...

Perceptual image compression for data transmission on the battlefield

This paper treats the compression of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. SAR images are di cult to compress, relative to natural images, because SAR contains an inherent high frequency speckle. Today's state-of-the-art coders are designed to work with natural images, which have a lower frequency content. Thus, their performance on SAR is under par. In this paper we give an overview performa...
